Overview

Brand-new loaded cylinder head for the Volvo D13 and Mack MP8 12.8L diesel - a complete assembly that seals the combustion chamber and carries the valves, springs, unit injectors and the overhead camshaft on these engines. The same engine is sold for Mack trucks as the MP8 and for Volvo trucks as the D13A, so one head covers both. It fits the EPA07 and EPA10 engines built with casting 1002019, which is the flat seat injector pattern; the 2015 and later engines use a different casting and a different injector bore.

Includes: intake valves, exhaust valves, valve springs, retainer locks, stem seals, line-bored cam bearing caps and copper injector cups. The D13 is 12.8L (780 cu in) - some catalogues still print it as 12.7L.

Does not fit: the 2015 and later D13 / MP8 that carry casting 1002120 or head 22797841 (EPA14, GHG14 and GHG17 / D13TC engines - different casting and injector bore); the D11 10.8L; the D12 12.1L; the D13K Euro 6. Why It's Better

Brand-new casting, not a rebuilt original. The casting has no heat-cycle history behind it - never welded, never re-decked, no repaired cracks and no stripped injector hold-down threads. A rebuilt D13 head carries the fatigue of the truck it came off, and on a 500 hp linehaul engine that history is what fails first.

Cam bearing caps line-bored with the head. The caps come fitted and line-bored to this casting, so the cam turns true and does not have to be re-fitted on the bench. Deck surface machined flat, valve seats cut to the factory angle, and every casting pressure checked before assembly.

The injector cup is the leak point, and ours is fitted and sealed. On a high-hour D13 the coolant and combustion leaks usually start at the injector cup, not at the head gasket. The copper cups in this assembly are the original-pattern flat seat type, installed and sealed before shipping, so the only thing to transfer is the injectors themselves.

One head for Volvo and Mack. The D13A and the MP8 are the same engine, so a fleet running VNL tractors alongside Pinnacle or Granite trucks can stock one head and cover both.

FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this is the right head for my engine?
Three checks. First, the casting number on your original head should read 1002019 (1001960, 70502 and 70704 cross to the same casting family) - if it reads 1002120, that is the EPA14 / EPA17 head and this one is not for you. Second, your engine is the 12.8L D13 or MP8, not the 10.8L D11 or the 12.1L D12. Third, the emissions label says EPA07 or EPA10. If you are unsure, send us the casting number and a photo of the injector bore and we will confirm before you order.

Q: What is the difference between 85020271 and 85022656?
Both are assembly numbers for the same Volvo EPA07 / EPA10 head, and the later number supersedes the earlier one. This assembly also replaces 85020273, 85020274, 85022657, 8500985, 23491393, 23930728 and the rest of the list in the specifications. Note that 22797841 is a different head - that is the 2015 and later EPA14 / EPA17 assembly.

Q: How is it packed?
The head is bolted to a wooden pallet base and shipped in a wooden crate so the deck face and the cam bearing caps are protected in transit. Multiple heads ship on a single pallet.

Q: Copper cups or stainless cups - and which injectors do they take?
This assembly ships with copper cups, which take the flat tip injectors used on the EPA07 / EPA10 engine. Stainless cups are the newer design and take conical (tapered) tip injectors - the two are not interchangeable, and you cannot swap cups alone: moving to stainless means moving to the newer injectors as well. Tell us which injector tip you have before ordering and we will confirm the configuration.

Q: What do I need to do before installing it?
Transfer your injectors and injector hold-downs, use a new head gasket and a complete new set of head bolts, and torque them in the sequence in the service manual for your engine serial number. Set the valve lash and check injector height as the manual specifies, then refill with the correct coolant.

Q: What does the warranty cover?
12 months against manufacturing defects - cracks, porosity and valve seat problems. Send us photos and the engine serial number and we will handle the claim.
