Loaded Cylinder Head for Detroit Series 60 14.0L DDEC VI

Overview

Brand-new loaded cylinder head for the Detroit Diesel Series 60 14.0L DDEC VI diesel - a complete assembly that seals the combustion chamber and carries the valves, springs, unit injectors and the overhead camshaft that drives them on these engines. One casting covers all six cylinders, so a complete engine takes just one. The head ships fully assembled with the valvetrain installed and the valves lapped, ready to bolt down with no machine shop time beforehand.

Includes: intake valves, exhaust valves, valve springs, retainers, locks, stem seals and injector cups.

Fitment

Engine Model Engine Years
Fits Detroit Diesel Series 60 14.0L DDEC VI 2007-2009

Does not fit: the 12.7L Series 60 (18 valves, different casting); the 2001-2006 14.0L engines with DDEC IV or DDEC V electronics, castings 23534748, 23538858, 23526607 and 23526608; the DD15. Send us your engine serial number and the casting number raised on your original head and we will verify before shipping.

Why It's Better

Brand-new casting, not a rebuilt original. The casting has no heat-cycle history behind it - never welded, never re-decked, no repaired cracks and no stripped injector hold-down threads. Rebuilt heads carry the fatigue of the engine they came off, and on a 14.0L EGR engine that history is what fails first.

Deck machined flat, seats cut, casting pressure tested. The deck surface is machined to a flat plane so the head gasket seals against combustion pressure, the valve seats are cut to the factory angle and every casting is pressure checked for porosity before anything is assembled into it.

Built for the EGR engine, not the pre-EGR one. The DDEC VI version of the Series 60 runs cooled exhaust gas back through the intake and adds a DPF, which raises the heat the head has to reject compared with the earlier non-EGR engines. The coolant passages and the injector bores on this casting are the DDEC VI pattern, which is why the earlier heads will not substitute.

Assembled with the injector cups in place. Valves, springs, retainers, locks and stem seals are installed and the injector cups are fitted and sealed, so the only thing to transfer from your old head is the injectors themselves.

FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this is the right head for my engine?
Three checks. First, the casting number raised on the side of your original head should be 23534743 or 23534745. Second, your engine is the 14.0L with DDEC VI electronics - the 2007 and later EPA07 version with EGR and a DPF. Third, your truck falls in the year range in the fitment table. If any of those do not line up, send us the engine serial number and we will check it against the parts catalogue before you order.

Q: What is the difference between 23538857 and the older 23534748 or 23538858 heads?
23538857 is the DDEC VI casting for the 2007-2009 14.0L engine. 23534748 and 23538858 belong to the 2001-2006 generation that ran DDEC IV and DDEC V electronics, which is a different casting with different coolant passages and injector bores. They are the same displacement but not interchangeable, which is why those numbers are listed as does-not-fit above rather than as replacements.

Q: Is the 2006 model year covered?
Most 2006 trucks carry the DDEC V engine and take the earlier head. A small number of late 2006 builds were already DDEC VI, so send us your engine serial number if your truck is a 2006 and we will confirm which one you have.

Q: How is it packed?
The head is bolted to a wooden pallet base and shipped in a wooden crate so the deck face and the valvetrain are protected in transit. Multiple heads ship on a single pallet.

Q: What do I need to do before installing it?
Transfer your injectors into the new head, use new head bolts, and torque them in the sequence in the service manual for your engine serial number rather than a single figure - the Series 60 uses a torque-plus-angle procedure. Check valve lash after the head is down and refill with the correct coolant.

Q: What does the warranty cover?
12 months against manufacturing defects - cracks, porosity and valve seat problems. Send us photos and the engine serial number and we will handle the claim.
