Loaded Cylinder Head for Cummins ISB 5.9 24V Common Rail

$1,561.00

Overview

Brand-new loaded cylinder head for the Cummins ISB 5.9L 24-valve common rail diesel - a complete assembly that seals the combustion chamber and carries the valves, springs, injectors and rocker assembly on these engines. This is the 24-valve head, four valves per cylinder, used with the high-pressure common rail fuel system and CP3 pump that arrived in the 2003 model year. One casting covers all six cylinders, so a complete engine takes just one. It ships fully assembled with the valvetrain installed and the valves lapped, so there is no machine shop time before you bolt it on.

Includes: Valves, valve springs, valve retainers, keepers and valve stem seals - all installed, with the valves lapped so they are ready to seal.

Fitment

Engine Fits the Cummins ISB 5.9L inline 6-cylinder 24-valve turbo diesel (4 valves per cylinder) with the high-pressure common rail fuel system and CP3 injection pump
Engine Years 2003-2007 for the Dodge Ram pickups listed below; the same common rail 5.9 ISB was used in medium duty trucks, buses, motorhomes and industrial equipment over the same period
Vehicle Fits Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickups
Vehicle Years 2003-2007 (the 6.7L ISB that replaced the 5.9 in mid-2007 uses a different head)
Casting Number 3954670 / 3957383 / 3965999 / 3977221 / 4931647

Application Fits medium duty trucks, school buses, step vans and Class C motorhomes built with the 2003-2007 common rail 5.9 ISB: fits Blue Bird and Thomas Built school buses, fits Freightliner Business Class M2 trucks, fits International 4000 series trucks; also fits generator sets, irrigation pumps, agricultural machines and construction equipment powered by this engine

Why It's Better

  • Brand-new casting - a new head with no heat-cycle history, never welded, never re-decked and with no repaired cracks
  • Complete new valvetrain - valves, springs, retainers, keepers and valve stem seals installed, with the valves lapped so they are ready to seal
  • Machined for the common rail fuel system - the injector bores and the rocker box pass-through provisions are cut for the solenoid injectors and their electrical connectors
  • Pressure tested and vacuum checked, with the deck and manifold faces machined flat for a clean gasket seal

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this for the 12-valve 5.9, the VP44 24-valve 5.9, or the common rail 24-valve 5.9?
It is for the 24-valve common rail 5.9 ISB with the CP3 pump only (2003-2007). It does not fit the 12-valve 5.9 (1989-1998, VE or P7100 mechanical pump), it does not fit the VP44 24-valve 5.9 (1998.5-2002), and it does not fit the 6.7L ISB or QSB that replaced the 5.9 from 2007.5 on. It also does not fit the 8.3L ISC or QSC, the 8.9L ISL or QSL, or the 4BT and ISB4.5 four-cylinder engines.

Q: How do I tell whether my 5.9 is the common rail engine?
Look at the fuel system. The common rail engine has a high-pressure fuel rail running along the head with a line out to each injector, and its injectors are solenoid units with electrical connectors. The earlier 24-valve engine has high-pressure lines feeding straight from the VP44 rotary pump instead, with no rail at all. Both are 24-valve with four valves per cylinder and both use a one-piece valve cover, so the fuel system is what tells them apart.

Q: How do I confirm it fits my truck?
Compare the number cast into your original head against the casting number and Replaces list above, or send us your engine serial number and CPL number and we will verify the arrangement before shipping. The 5.9 ISB was built in many ratings and CPL configurations, so the serial number is the fastest way to confirm.

Q: How many do I need?
One. This is a single one-piece head that covers all six cylinders, so a complete engine takes just 1 cylinder head.

Q: What equipment does this cylinder head fit?
It fits Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickups from 2003 to 2007. On the vocational side it fits medium duty trucks, school buses, step vans and Class C motorhomes built with the same common rail 5.9 ISB: fits Blue Bird and Thomas Built school buses, fits Freightliner Business Class M2 trucks and fits International 4000 series trucks. It also fits generator sets, irrigation pumps and agricultural and construction equipment powered by this engine.

Q: Can I reuse my original head bolts, and what do they torque to?
Use new bolts - they are torque-to-yield and single-use. The engine uses 6 bolts per cylinder: 44 ft-lb on all bolts, then 89 ft-lb, then a recheck at 89 ft-lb, then a final 90 degree turn on all of them. Fit a new head gasket at the same time.
