Overview

Brand-new loaded cylinder head for the John Deere 6090 9.0L PowerTech diesel - a complete assembly that seals the combustion chamber and carries the valves, springs and valve bridges on these engines. One casting covers all six cylinders, so a complete engine takes just one. It ships fully assembled with the valvetrain and the valve bridges in place, ready to bolt down with no machine shop time beforehand.

Includes: intake valves, exhaust valves, valve springs, retainers, locks, stem seals and valve bridges.

Fitment

Engine Model Engine Years
Fits John Deere 6090 9.0L PowerTech (Tier 2 / Tier 3) 2004-2011
Fits John Deere 6090 9.0L PowerTech (Interim Tier 4) 2011-2014

Does not fit: the 6068 6.8L engine (that head is RE553421); the 4045 4.5L; the 13.5L and 13.6L engines (9430, 9530, 9630 and the S680 and larger combines); and Final Tier 4 6090 units that carry head RE533513 (original reman number SE502540). Send us the casting number on your head and your machine serial number and we will verify before shipping.

Why It's Better

Brand-new casting, not a rebuilt original. The casting has no heat-cycle history behind it - never welded, never re-decked, no repaired cracks and no stripped injector hold-down threads. A rebuilt head carries the fatigue of the machine it came off, and on a 6090 pulling a disc or a combine rotor that history is what fails first.

Deck machined flat, seats cut, casting pressure tested. The deck surface is machined to a flat plane so the head gasket seals against combustion pressure, the valve seats are cut to the factory angle and every casting is pressure checked for porosity before anything is assembled into it.

Valve bridges fitted and seated. This is a four-valve head with two bridges per cylinder, so the bridge height and the valve lash have to be right or the valves will not seat evenly. The bridges come installed and set on the bench, which is the part most rebuilders get wrong when they assemble a bare casting.

One casting for the whole 6090 range. The same head serves the 8030 and 8R tractors, the STS and S-series combines, the sprayers, the cotton pickers and the graders and excavators that run the 9.0L, so a shop stocking one head covers the whole fleet.

FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this is the right head for my machine?
Two checks. First, the casting number cast into your original head should read R525583 - it is raised on the head near the valve bridge area. Second, your engine is the 9.0L 6090, not the 6.8L 6068 or the 13.5L. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the casting number and your machine model and serial number and we will confirm before you order.

Q: What is the difference between RE523680, RE530370, SE501747 and RE533513?
RE523680 is the new assembly number and RE530370 is the same assembly listed as its substitute. SE501747 is the factory reman version, and RE554421, RE550427, RE520142 and R518096 all cross to the same head. RE533513 is a different matter: it is the head used on the Interim Tier 4 and later engines and its factory reman number is SE502540, so if your original reads RE533513, check with us before ordering rather than assuming this one substitutes.

Q: Is RE553421 the same part?
No. RE553421 is the head for the 6068 6.8L engine used in the 7630 to 7930 tractors, the 9570 STS and the 670G and 672G graders. The number differs from RE554421 by one digit and the two get mixed up constantly, so check the digit before you order.

Q: How is it packed?
The head is bolted to a wooden pallet base and shipped in a wooden crate so the deck face and the valve train are protected in transit. Multiple heads ship on a single pallet.

Q: What do I need to do before installing it?
Use a new head gasket and a complete new set of head bolts, torque them in the sequence in the service manual for your engine serial number, then set the valve lash and check the injector height as the manual specifies. The valve bridges are already fitted, but the lash still has to be set on the machine.

Q: What does the warranty cover?
12 months against manufacturing defects - cracks, porosity and valve seat problems. Send us photos and the engine serial number and we will handle the claim.
