Loaded Cylinder Head for Detroit DD15 & DD16 Casting 47304

$3,813.00

Overview

Brand-new loaded cylinder head for the Detroit Diesel DD15 and DD16 diesel - a complete assembly that seals the combustion chamber and carries the valves, springs, unit injectors and the twin overhead camshafts on these engines. One casting covers both engines: they share the same 139 mm bore, so the combustion chamber, valve layout and head bolt pattern are identical and the stroke is the only difference between the 14.8L DD15 and the 15.6L DD16. This is the late 47304 casting for the GHG17 / EPA17 platform and the late EPA13 engines before it.

Includes: intake valves, exhaust valves, valve springs, retainers, locks, stem seals and injector cups.

Fitment

Engine Model Engine Years
Fits Detroit DD15 14.8L (late EPA13) 2015-2016
Fits Detroit DD15 14.8L (GHG17 / EPA17) 2016-2022
Fits Detroit DD16 15.6L (GHG17 / EPA17) 2016-2022

Does not fit: the early DD15 casting 47202 / 47200 (OE A4720100520, 4720101220, 4720101520 - EPA07 / EPA10, 2008-2014); the DD13 12.8L; DD16 units built on the pre-GHG17 platform; the Series 60. Send us the casting number on your original head and your engine serial number and we will verify before shipping.

Why It's Better

Brand-new casting, not a rebuilt original. The casting has no heat-cycle history behind it - never welded, never re-decked, no repaired cracks and no stripped bolt threads. A reman head carries the fatigue of the engine it came off, and on a high-output engine running 1,850 lb-ft and up, that history is what fails first.

Deck machined flat, seats cut, casting pressure tested. The deck surface is machined to a flat plane so the head gasket seals against combustion pressure, the valve seats are cut to the factory angle and every casting is pressure checked for porosity before anything is assembled into it.

Built to the late 47304 pattern. The GHG17 engine runs the ACRS common rail system at higher injection pressure than the EPA10 generation did, and the late casting is a different part from the early one - the coolant passages and injector bores match the GHG17 engine, which is why the EPA10-era heads will not substitute.

One head for both engines, assembled and ready. The DD15 and the DD16 take the same casting, the injector cups are fitted and sealed, and all you transfer from your old head is the injectors themselves.

FAQ

Q: How do I confirm this is the right head for my engine?
Four checks, in this order. First and most important: the casting number raised on the side of your original head must read 47304. Second: your engine is a DD15 (14.8L) or DD16 (15.6L) - not the 12.8L DD13. Third: check your engine model number or serial number prefix - GHG17 engines run model numbers D472910 (DD15) and D473910 (DD16), and late EPA13 DD15s run D472903 through D472908. Fourth: your emissions platform is GHG17 / EPA17 or late EPA13. If any check fails, send us a photo of the casting number and your engine serial number and we will point you to the right part.

Q: What is the difference between casting 47304 and 47202?
They are the two generations of the DD15 head and they do not interchange. 47202 belongs to the EPA07 / EPA10 engines built from 2008 through 2014, with OE numbers in the A4720100520, 4720101220 and 4720101520 family. 47304 is the late casting for the late EPA13 and GHG17 / EPA17 engines from 2016 on. If your casting reads 47202 or 47200, you need the early-style head - send us a photo and we will point you to it. Also note that 2021 and later engines may carry updated castings, so verify your casting number even if the year matches.

Q: How is it packed?
The head is bolted to a wooden pallet base and shipped in a wooden crate so the deck face and the valvetrain are protected in transit. Multiple heads ship on a single pallet.

Q: What do I need to do before installing it?
Transfer your injectors into the new head, fit a complete new set of head bolts, and torque them in the sequence in the service manual for your engine serial number - the DD platform uses a torque-plus-angle procedure and the bolts are one-time-use. Refill with the correct coolant and check for leaks at the injector cups before returning to service.

Q: What does the warranty cover?
12 months against manufacturing defects - cracks, porosity and valve seat problems. Send us photos and the engine serial number and we will handle the claim.
