Loaded Cylinder Head for Cummins ISB 5.9 24V Non-Common Rail
Overview
Brand-new loaded cylinder head for the Cummins ISB 5.9L 24-valve diesel - a complete assembly that seals the combustion chamber and carries the valves, springs, injectors and rocker assembly on these engines. This is the 24-valve head, four valves per cylinder, used with the VP44 electronic rotary pump before common rail injection arrived in 2003. One casting covers all six cylinders, so a complete engine takes just one. It ships fully assembled with the valvetrain installed and the valves lapped, so there is no machine shop time before you bolt it on.
Includes: Valves, valve springs, valve retainers, keepers and valve stem seals - all installed, with the valves lapped so they are ready to seal.
Fitment

| Engine Years | 1998.5-2002 for the Dodge Ram pickups listed below; the same non-common-rail 5.9 ISB was used in medium duty trucks, buses, motorhomes and industrial equipment over the same period |
| Vehicle | Fits Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickups |
| Vehicle Years | 1998.5-2002 (the VP44 era; 2003 and later trucks use a common rail fuel system and a different cylinder head) |
| Casting Number | 3943627 / 5361587 |

Why It's Better
- Brand-new casting - a new head with no heat-cycle history, never welded, never re-decked and with no repaired cracks
- Complete new valvetrain - valves, springs, retainers, keepers and valve stem seals installed, with the valves lapped so they are ready to seal
- Sensor ports drilled and tapped - the coolant temperature, intake pressure and oil pressure sensor ports on the intake side are machined, so nothing has to be added before installation
- Pressure tested and vacuum checked, with the deck and manifold faces machined flat for a clean gasket seal

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this for the 12-valve 5.9, the 24-valve VP44 5.9, or the common rail 5.9?
It is for the 24-valve non-common-rail 5.9 ISB with the VP44 rotary pump only. It does not fit the 12-valve 5.9 (1989-1998, VE or P7100 mechanical pump), the common rail 5.9 (2003-2007, CP3 pump), the 6.7L ISB or QSB, the 8.3L ISC or QSC, the 8.9L ISL or QSL, or the 4BT 3.9 four-cylinder.
Q: How do I tell which 5.9 I have?
Two quick checks. First, look at the valve cover: six separate small covers means the 12-valve engine (1989-1998) and this head does not fit; one full-length cover means the 24-valve engine. Second, on a 24-valve engine, look at the fuel system: if a high-pressure fuel rail runs along the head with a line to each injector, that is the common rail engine (2003-2007) and this head does not fit; if the high-pressure lines come straight from the VP44 rotary pump, that is the engine this head fits.
Q: How do I confirm it fits my truck?
Compare the number cast into your original head against the casting number and Replaces list above, or send us your engine serial number and CPL number and we will verify the arrangement before shipping. The 5.9 ISB was built in many ratings and CPL configurations, so the serial number is the fastest way to confirm.
Q: How many do I need?
One. This is a single one-piece head that covers all six cylinders, so a complete engine takes just 1 cylinder head.
Q: What equipment does this cylinder head fit?
It fits Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickups from 1998.5 to 2002. On the vocational side it fits medium duty trucks, school buses, step vans and Class C motorhomes built with the same non-common-rail 5.9 ISB: fits Blue Bird and Thomas Built school buses, fits Freightliner FL60 and FL70 trucks and fits International 4000 series trucks. It also fits generator sets, irrigation pumps and agricultural and construction equipment powered by this engine.
Q: Can I reuse my original head bolts, and what do they torque to?
Use new bolts - they are torque-to-yield and single-use. The 24-valve engine uses 6 bolts per cylinder: 44 ft-lb on all bolts, then 89 ft-lb, then a recheck at 89 ft-lb, then a final 90 degree turn on all of them. Fit a new head gasket at the same time.
